Steve Dahl was the most entertaining thing going until he was YANKED by unappreciative management recently. I listened to him via podcast for several years here in La Crosse- amazingly, I had loved to hear him as I BEGAN my USPS career in Illinois, 30 years ago!
Stever and I had parellelled our entire lives!
Even when he started, I thought Gary Meier was a kind of conceited, phony jerk... but hey- the Stevester needed a sidekick! ( Even if he did wear Frey boots, and have kind of a phoney " dry look".
The thing about Steve Dahl is that he is ...
authentic. So little is anymore, these days. What he said was
really what he actually thought!I so enjoy(ed) his quickness of mind, when he reacted to the news, to Buzz's comments, whatever- he was quite refreshing, in his
actual thoughts about the news, and whatever else would come up during his show-
it was all real!!He has the
quickest brain for this type of thing I have ever seen! (For making things up, on the spur of the moment). I always laugh inwardly as he "improvises"- an inborn skill that many
think that they have, but that most (nearly
all) do
not!But the best thing about Steve Dahl was his
self awareness-
One morning, he was regaling us with his tale of the morning commute, wherein he "raced a guy in a pickup truck", etc.
When Buzz asked "Why?" he said, with the knowledge of his own psyche that most of us deny:
"Because I'm an egomaniac!!"
He was 100% right, and
that is why I love him!
And I love his conversations with Pete- Pete's laugh was GREAT!, and so authentic- he really loved Steve- and I especially will miss "Drew", with his Aunt Jemima Headscarf and "DON'T SAY THAT!" comments by Steve.
Steve Dahl is a force of nature, and will not disappear: he is here to stay, no matter what the "managers" of radio might say.
